We all love stories!

By definition storytelling is “the conveying of events in words, images and sounds often by improvisation or embellishment.” In the world of marketing, storytelling offers a number of advantages and opportunities.

Pixar Animation Studios, or simply Pixar, is a computer animation film studio based in California, US. It has produced 13 feature films, such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo , The Incredibles , Cars , Ratatouille , WALL-E , Up , and Brave . Twelve of the films have received both critical and financial success, Which suggests that Pixar knows story telling well.

Below you’ll discover 22 stroytelling rules by Pixar. These rules were originally tweeted by Emma Coats, Pixar’s Story Artist.

You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.

You gotta keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. They can be very different.

Trying for theme is important, but you won’t see what the story is actually about til you’re at the end of it. Now rewrite.

Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___.

Simplify. Focus. Combine characters. Hop over detours. You’ll feel like you’re losing valuable stuff but it sets you free.

What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal?

Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard, get yours working up front.

Finish your story, let go even if it’s not perfect. In an ideal world you have both, but move on. Do better next time.

When you’re stuck, make a list of what WOULDN’T happen next. Lots of times the material to get you unstuck will show up.

Pull apart the stories you like. What you like in them is a part of you; you’ve got to recognize it before you can use it.

Putting it on paper lets you start fixing it. If it stays in your head, a perfect idea, you’ll never share it with anyone.

Discount the 1st thing that comes to mind. And the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th – get the obvious out of the way. Surprise yourself.

Give your characters opinions. Passive/malleable might seem likable to you as you write, but it’s poison to the audience.

Why must you tell THIS story? What’s the belief burning within you that your story feeds off of? That’s the heart of it.

If you were your character, in this situation, how would you feel? Honesty lends credibility to unbelievable situations.

What are the stakes? Give us reason to root for the character. What happens if they don’t succeed? Stack the odds against.

No work is ever wasted. If it’s not working, let go and move on – it’ll come back around to be useful later.

You have to know yourself: the difference between doing your best & fussing. Story is testing, not refining.

Coincidences to get characters into trouble are great; coincidences to get them out of it are cheating.

Exercise: take the building blocks of a movie you dislike. How d’you rearrange them into what you DO like?

You gotta identify with your situation/characters, can’t just write ‘cool’. What would make YOU act that way?

What’s the essence of your story? Most economical telling of it? If you know that, you can build out from there.

Which one is your favorite storytelling rule? Mine is number 9: When you’re stuck, make a list of what WOULDN’T happen next.

It’s always a big mistake, it’s just asking for trouble, because the prospect will know that you’re not really prepared to talk about the prospect’s real issues. Therefore, before you present to a prospect, there are six key perspectives that you absolutely MUST have (if you want a fast sale). Here they are:

1) The prospect’s history. Where are they coming from? How did they get here? What do they know about your and your firm? What dealings have taken place in the past?

2) Frames of reference. What ideologies and situations might affect their decision-making? Do they have a certain way of viewing your offering? How do they feel about their own firm?

3) Needs and desires. Where do they want to go? How do they expect to feel when they get there? How do they think they’re going to get there? What do they think will prevent it?

4) Likely objections. What is going to cause them to balk? How fervently do the believe in that objection? How real is it? Might it block the deal, no matter what you say or do?

5) Capacity to act. Are you communicating with decision-makers or seat-warmers? If decision-makers, what decision do you want them to make? If not, why are you talking to them?

6) Decision-making style. If they’re decision-makers, how do they make decisions? Are they all about facts and figures? Or do they decide according to a gut feeling?

Once you understand these six perspectives, you can tailor your conversation or presentation to match what’s really going on…rather than what you might otherwise wish were going on.

For example, if you know that your firm contributed to the prospect’s success in the past, make sure that each contact knows it, because it may have happened before their time.

Similarly, if the decision-maker likes facts and figures, you build your value proposition around ROI. If he’s a gut-feeling guy, use anecdotes and imagery to bring out the emotions.

This post by Geoffrey James originally appeared on BNET.

Twitter, Facebook Pages for Businesses, Press Releases, video marketing, blogging… but are you taking advantage of the best online business social media networking site out there?

LinkedIn.com is a networking site for businesses, employees, contractors, and other professionals. While LinkedIn.com is still considered social media, the word social can be misleading.

You’re not going to talk about where you had dinner and with whom, spouse issues, or other personal matters on LinkedIn.com. Instead, you’re going to discuss business, online business and offline businesses. For entrepreneurs and business owners, it’s a refreshing network in which to be a part. If you do not have a LinkedIn profile yet, it’s good for you to get it done today!

In terms of the ability to find the most qualified leads for your online business, you can’t beat LinkedIn.com. You can get a free account, up to a monthly account for around $100.00 per month with all the features you need to market your online business in a fun and creative way. It’s important to have some guidelines on how to make LinkedIn work for you and your business.

Don’t skimp on filling out your profile. Include a professional headshot, as well as fill in every last part of your profile that you can. Once you get your profile complete with a professional headshot, and every bit of information filled out, promote your profile, join groups, participate in groups, and ask questions and answer questions as much as you can.

When you interact with people in LinkedIn, LinkedIn will surprise you with its power as a soft marketing platform for businesses and entrepreneurs.

PayPal is one of the most well-known online payment processors, which most of us selling online use. We all know as well that PayPal is known for that that it can freeze your account and keep your money upto 6 months.

Maria Gudelis, whom I have known for a couple of years now, personally experienced this. Read her email below for some highly useful tips on how to AVOID problems with PayPal.

On Mon, May 14, 2012 at 12:11 AM, Maria Gudelis wrote:

OK…you gotta hear about our STRANGE interludes with Paypal…

I promise to give you our DEEPEST and most important secrets

that we invested over 40 total hours with PayPal employees

to make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

It’s maybe a ‘strange’ email to send to you today but

in our total defense…a lot of you THUNDERED messages to our

help desk asking TONS of questions like “What Happened, tell us!”

So here it goes…our story and lessons learned.

==============================

Take a look at our PAYPAL 100k funds frozen story

so it doesn’t happen to YOU!

============================== ======

7 PayPal accounts ‘frozen faster than a crappy frozen dinner’

happened about 45 days ago. Can you imagine not

being able to take out your hard money earned? Over

100k of funds frozen in cyberspace to the PayPal gods.

And get this…the worst case scenario…you get your

money back 6 months later!

I don’t know about you…but we pay our affiliates, our contract

workers by PayPal…and of course Tina’s “kiddy” gas money

too on a PayPal debit card!

Imagine getting a call from your daughter,

while you are traveling and can’t even go to a bank for

her…and she says’ “Mommy, I’m at the gas station and

it won’t accept my paypal card”

That’s what happened to Tina.

And to elevate the stress more…we were only 3 weeks away

from a MEGA huge launch of our ultimate social challenge

where historically we have brought in over $170,000 in less

than 7 days, over 6,500 buyers…

=====================================

Can you imagine what a problem to have…not able

to TAKE IN money from your customers?

=====================================

What caused it? Could it be GASP…we were making

TOO much money?

Check this out…we have had historically over the

past 6-7 years of teaching over 25,000 students all over

the world…LESS than a 3% refund rate.

So it couldn’t have been because of the refunds.

Well, not that I’m a Nostradamus of doom…

But I will say this. This can easily happen to you because

we do believe that in order to prevent scamsters on the

Internet..PayPal and other 3 letter word organizations

are taking a ‘blanket Orwellian’ approach to this.

And dang it, it’s frustrating because we all know PayPal

started their success with the ‘solo-entrepreneur’.

6 weeks of “due diligence” later and our accounts

are unfrozen and we have a great relationship with

PayPal but what was the cause you might wonder?

====================================

Here’s 3 things you can do to prevent this happening to YOU!

=============================== ======

We do know a few things from our RISK manager that

is frankly, just good business practices that can help

this from happening to you.

Plus I’ll share a VERY IMPORTANT resource you simply

gotta have.

1. Make sure you check your customer service number that

it WORKS and you RESPOND fast.

Here’s what happened, since we have 7 different PayPal accounts

and some are over 6 years old…one of them had a ‘older’ customer

service number that we didn’t realize hadn’t been updated.

So…when PayPal tried to reach that number…well, red flags

went up.

That started the investigation and it domino rolled into our

other 6 accounts as he started to look at the transfers, mass

payments etc. between those accounts.

So I STRONGLY urge you to right now log into your PayPal

and look at what you have in there under customer service

contact…if you are like me…it might be something you input

years ago and forgot to update!

2. If you have joint ventures or partners…the BEST solution

is to have one LEGAL entity (an LLC or Corporation) you

all share.

That way all revenues consolidate into that one entity. That

one legal entity then proper accounting wise sends out the profit

sharing money! (trust me, this is a far better solution to do it

the right way accounting wise!)

Next best alternative? Phone PayPal to let them know you have

‘different’ accounts because of your joint ventures. For example

Tina and I and Art have various JV’s together and so sometimes

certain product revenues get ‘shared’ and thus the mass pays

occur in PayPal.

Now to PayPal… think about it – they are wondering what the

heck is this? Why don’t we see ‘invoices’ in PayPal for that.

That’s what they wanted us to do in the future – NEVER pay

out via Mass Pay and to use their invoice feature.

=======================================

Follow the money tip…PayPal makes more service

fees from invoicing then via mass pays.

=======================================

3. The third tip is a biggie….have a BACK UP way to

take money. Seriously, get off thy duff right now and

go get a 2nd way to take in funds. There are many ways

and here are some

- merchant account (highly recommended so you can ‘season’ the account)

- Amazon payments

- Google checkout

- Wepay dot com

- and others….

=====================================

How to keep your PayPal account SAFE and avoid

getting frozen

=====================================

OK, still with me? Good for you…because this stuff is

the LIFEBLOOD to your business!

I promised we would share a very IMPORTANT resource

for you…and for goodness sake…

We STRONGLY suggest you click the link below because

you can grab “payment protect” for ONLY $7

–> PAYMENT PROTECT<– Click Here

And by MIDNIGHT MONDAY (less than 36 hours from NOW)

it goes to $97!

Is a critical resource for you to have right now.

You’ll thank Tina and I for it, you truly will!

Talk soon!

Maria “money protecting you” Gudelis

Tina “in thoughtful sales” Williams

P.S. Oh the _____________ from the subject line?

Twas “subscription payments” – yes, PayPal does not

allow us to do that anymore…a ha – but our merchant

account will! Yipeeeee!

Entrepreneur, Gain More Power with This New Year’s Message…

Master Marketer Jay Abraham has been my idol and mentor for years now and I simply love his way of communicating his message and values – at the same time he shares his market proven wisdom.

This time I want to share Jay’s New Year’s massage to his subscribers. Please read it, with heart and thought…

From Jay Abraham Newsletter:

So, ok… 2012 is here. What–if anything, are you… will you be doing
differently this year (than last year), to propel your business to more
success, achievement and greatness?

If you have a great answer, then–stop reading. If NOT, here are some
thoughts to—maybe inspire you to seek more breakthrough thinking in
the areas of marketing, strategy, innovation and self-management.

Winston Churchill is famed for delivering the shortest commencement
speech ever recorded in college history:

“Never give in. Never, never, never–in nothing great or small, large or
petty–never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense.
Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might
of the enemy. “

What’s the implication? Well (I think) there are many. If you’re small
and struggling—take a deep breath, draw in your second wind, dust
yourself off and jump back into the ring -but fighting not against mere
competition.

Rather, fight against mediocrity and commoditization–by making yourself
and your business unique, desirable, valuable–far more valuable than
your competition can possibly equal.

How? Don’t allow us to be mere intellectual entertainment. Make my
resources your propellant towards greater achievement.

Focus on your marketplace, not on your own self interests.

In everything you do online or off–sell leadership. Demonstrate to
people that you feel their pain or hopes or dreams or fears or needs.
Don’t patronize or pander. Definitely don’t self-serve! Provide people
with ideas, advice information that have (and hold) true value or
entertainment or purpose for THEM–not you.

Make your market, your client, your prospect, your recipient of whatever
communication you’re sending–make THEM the center of attention. It’s not
about you. It’s all about them.

This may sound awkward–but–most people fall in love with their product,
service, company or industry. Try–instead–falling in love with the
people you serve, the people you’re communicating and connecting with.

Show people that THEY matter. Their lives, their interests and their
situation truly matters to you and your business.

In life and in business, we are rewarded in direct proportion to the
value, contribution and benefit we bring to others. Conduct a quick
reality check. Do you bring meaningful value to others–in what your
business does, certainly.

But do your communications, conversations, interactions, all bring
people value?

Are they (and you) authentic, purposeful? Remember that the entire
concept of value, benefit and contribution are all–totally subjective.
What YOU think may be appealing, exciting, worthwhile–your market may
find worthless. So let THEM always decide with their response, their
sharing, their positive–or negative feedback.

Always stop and ask yourself, your team, your marketing–do they and what
you are doing and saying– really add value?

I was reading a staggering article from legendary business guru–Peter
Drucker over the holidays. It focused on the misperception most people
have about entrepreneurs.

Drucker says most small business owners are NOT entrepreneurs. They are
merely proprietors–who add no true value to the world other than perhaps
diverting some of the commerce that their industry would normally
generate over to themselves.

Stated differently, the vast majority of businesses are mere
commodities, marginalized, non distinguishable vendors of
stuff–providing nothing unique, nothing superior, no greater experience,
no distinctive benefit or advantage to the consumer.

True entrepreneurs–on the other hand strive to create something new or
better for their marketplace in what they do. They create true value for
the consumer. They engineer it or execute it…or present it…or purvey
it differently than the maddening crowd of generic competitors do.

In small or larger ways, true entrepreneurs are the driving forces of
positive upheaval in their industries, markets and business worlds.

They have passion, purpose–a keen sense of possibility. They are
anything but ambivalent. They are anything but apathetic. True
entrepreneurs love change. They live for the opportunity to flex their
cerebral, creative juices.

Mere business proprietors are in it only for an income. All they do is
what has been done and is being done before them a thousand or a million
times, over. It’s almost a job. But true entrepreneurs–true
entrepreneurs create new satisfaction, new demand, new experiences, new
levels of dimension and possibility to (and through) whatever they do.

So here we are–at the forefront of the New Year, contemplating our
fates, our futures. My question to YOU is this: are you content with
mediocrity? Or are you game to create something (or some things) new,
something different, something better for your market?

Do you have the willingness to transform your business and relationship
with your market? Can you…will you transmute values (as Drucker says).
Will your marketing/selling strategy trigger a positive upheaval that
will transform the way your marketplace sees you, connects with you,
relates to you, respects you, remains loyal and a fan of you?

Some final points to consider as we begin our 2012 adventure into
marketing down the path of being preeminent.

True entrepreneurs relish the chance to surmount obstacles that their
other competitors find daunting. An enterprise that does NOT commit
itself to constantly innovate inevitably ages, dries up and declines,
then dies.

INNOVATION, by the way does NOT necessarily refer to anything high
tech–though it can be done that way.

It merely refers to anything tangible or intangible that brings greater
value, benefit, contribution, advantage, enjoyment, understanding,
protection or enrichment to a marketplace. That gives you an enormous
array of ways to become an agent of change, a creator of value–through
your marketing strategy and actions.

Finally–you must be willing to perceive change as an opportunity, not a
threat! Stop holding onto what already exists. Breakthroughs only occur
when you are pursuing something better. Drucker says true entrepreneurs
are awash with “rerum novarum cupidus.” That’s Latin for being “greedy
for new things.”

One more point. It’s important: entrepreneurship, innovation,
breakthrough thinking—none of it comes automatically.

It’s not necessarily natural. And YES, it is work to accomplish that
which your herd-based competitors won’t/don’t. But the rarified
satisfaction and fulfillment that comes with wanting to innovate,
reaching for innovation–for the benefit of your marketplace, working for
it—is unimaginably rewarding. Happy New Year!

There is no better feeling than the one that you are on top of the world with your business!

How to make that everyday reality?

Finding and defining your own voice, your unique way of delivering your message makes that small but so important difference. No one else can deliver it like you!

Unless you spend time on defining and developing a persona that your target market is attracted to and one they want to do business with, you cannot hope to succeed in business to your fullest potential.

Once that persona has been created and the narrative for your market has been created perfectly, every single thing in your business will become so much easier, your emails will be more welcome, your content will be considered more interesting, and your offers will be attractive than others.

As you can see it is no small order to shape a persona and narrative! And it’s YOU who is the most important part of that narrative.

Owning Your Voice – The Most Important Part of Your Narrative

You are the most important part of the narrative you craft, specifically, your need to define what are the most powerful and charismatic parts of your persona that will resonate with your clients and target market.

If you are thinking that you are not leading an interesting life enough for “creating a persona and narrative”, relax! Every person has something interesting in their life that can be leveraged, and it is up to you to find it and shape it into a story of yours.

What Is It in Your Life That Is Interesting?

How does one create an interesting and compelling story? How do you create a persona that is not only interesting, but compelling enough to attract your target market?

To start with, find out who is it that you do business with? Who it is you need to be for this business?

Do you know how you are perceived by people in the marketplace you have been in? If not, you must ask yourself how you would like to be perceived. While you think about this, find the best way to be perceived by your prospect. Then you can determine if this is something that you can pull off accurately.

Whatever you do, it is important to be as clear as possible about what would be the best way to be perceived. What image would your market, prospects, clients like to do business with? What type of person should you present to them?

So to help your potential prospects, clients and market, what would be your ideal view point, philosophy and opinion about certain issues relating to the industry that you are doing business with?

No matter what it is, you need 100% clarity from the get go. This can be challenging to do just by yourself. That is why coaches and mentors are so valuable. Also, commit time to be part of a power-group that is related to your business. It’s time well spent.
